Heart of a Coach - Brad Gruen
The heart of the FCA ministry is the Coach! This month, we are excited to feature Civic Memorial Huddle Coach Brad Gruen in our Heart of a Coach spotlight!
FCA: Why are you involved in FCA?
Gruen: I have been the Huddle Coach and a math teacher at Civic Memorial High School for the last 14 years. I saw the value of FCA right away because it allows students to talk about their faith in Jesus Christ in our school. I have always loved that FCA is student-led. Many great leaders have been developed by students leading through not only their words, but also their actions. By the end of the school year, the FCA members feel like they are a part of the same family because of the testimonies and wisdom shared through the Bible studies.
FCA: How has the campus ministry of FCA impacted you?
Gruen: I am personally encouraged by the joy that these students have when sharing the love of Jesus Christ with others! I am challenged at the meetings to be a better teacher, father, husband, and friend. I have also been encouraged and supported through the years by the FCA staff members who are great role models and friends.
FCA: You've been a part of our Guys Weekend of Champions for many years. How has FCA camp impacted your life?
Gruen: When I served at my first Guys Weekend (GWC) around 10 years ago, I saw the vision of FCA and the impact that it could have on our school and community. I loved seeing young men of God battling each other on the field/court and showing God's love at the same time. I also saw guys sharing some of their struggles with each other, realizing their need for community and accountability. In Proverbs 27:17 we read, "As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." At this last GWC (2017), I felt God was reminding me that I needed someone else to push me to be all that God intended me to be. He was specifically laying FCA Metro East staff member Tim Casey on my heart. Since GWC, God has taken our friendship to a new level. I have been encouraged and reminded who I am in Christ!
FCA: What is something about God you want others to know?
Gruen: I want others to know that God is good in good times and in bad. His timing is perfect, even when it doesn't feel like it. In romans 8:28, it says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."
